What is the ruling on one who used to masturbate during the daytime in Ramadan, being ignorant of its prohibition and of the general prohibition of masturbation?
Masturbation is forbidden by Islamic law and naturally detestable. Whoever engages in it must repent, even if they were ignorant of its prohibition, in accordance with the Almighty's saying: "Then, indeed your Lord, to those who committed evil in ignorance and then repented after that and corrected themselves—indeed, your Lord, thereafter, is Forgiving and Merciful" (Quran 16:119), and His saying: "And turn to Allah all of you, O believers, that you might succeed" (Quran 24:31). The days during which masturbation was practiced must be made up, along with paying an expiation for delay if another begins before the make-up is completed.
