What is salvation and how can God's wrath be averted from a person who fears hypocrisy and believes their heart is hardened, after having vowed commitment then falling into a sin immediately following a prayer that was answered for a desire, and finding in their reading of the Quran that verse 75 of Surah At-Tawbah applies to them?

Fear of hypocrisy, hellfire, and a bad end is a great act of worship. Its purpose is to encourage action, so if it leads to action, it is commendable. But if it leads to despair, then it is not the commanded fear. Therefore, one must be careful not to persist in it and should cure it with hope and good expectation of Allah. The pain of the heart is an indication that the heart is still alive, and it is treated by promptly engaging in sincere repentance. Repeated resolve to obey and its subsequent fading does not mean despair; rather, it necessitates more haste and promptness in repentance, for Allah loves the sinning, oft-repenting servant. And among the ways to deal with thinking about people's opinions is to conceal some good deeds, for the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, said: "Whoever among you can have a hidden good deed, let him do it."
