Tribulation (balā’) is a test and an examination, and it can be in good or evil, but it is often used to refer to calamities. A child who is not yet morally accountable (ghayr mukallaf), and the calamities that befall him, are not a tribulation in the legal sense that entails accountability. Tribulation and trial (balā’ and ibtilā’) are specific to those who are morally accountable, whereas calamities can affect everyone. Good deeds are recorded for a child, but bad deeds are not recorded against him. He is not held accountable for his impatience, nor is he obligated to be patient.
