The question

Is it permissible to hold the Eid prayer and sermon in a language other than Arabic in a mosque, and then to hold the Eid prayer and sermon in Arabic a short while later, due to differences in languages and customs, the spaciousness of the place, and to enable various communities to perform the prayer?

The answer

The Maliki and Hanbali schools of thought are of the view that it is not permissible to perform the Eid prayer more than once without a need. The Hanafis, on the other hand, permit it in two instances, and the Shafi'is permit it in more than that. It is preferable to perform it in one place to demonstrate unity. Excuses such as differences in customs and language do not justify repeating the prayer. The Eid sermon is valid even if delivered in a language other than Arabic.
