Were there prophets from among the Jinn?
Scholars have differed on the issue of the existence of prophets and messengers from among the jinn, holding two views:
1. The First View (the view of the majority): There are no prophets or messengers among the jinn; rather, there might be warners among them. They adduced as evidence Allah Almighty's saying: ﴿وَصْطَفَى مِنْ أَهْلِ الْقُرَى﴾ [Yusuf: 109], and His saying: ﴿وَمَا أَرْسَلْنَا قَبْلَكَ مِنَ الْمُرْسَلِينَ إِلَّا إِنَّهُمْ لَيَأْكُلُونَ الطَّعَامَ وَيَمْشُونَ فِي الْأَسْوَاقِ﴾ [Al-Furqan: 20], and His saying about Ibrahim: ﴿وَجَعَلْنَا فِي ذُرِّيَّتِهِ النُّبُوَّةَ وَالْكِتَابَ﴾ [Al-Ankabut: 27]. Ibn Kathir also mentioned that the verse ﴿وَإِذْ صَرَفْنَا إِلَيْكَ نَفَرًا مِنَ الْجِنِّ يَسْتَمِعُونَ الْقُرْآنَ فَلَمَّا حَضَرُوهُ قَالُوا أَنْصِتُوا فَلَمَّا قُضِيَ وَلَّوْا إِلَى قَوْمِهِمْ مُنْذِرِينَ﴾ [Al-Ahqaf: 29] indicates that there are warners among the jinn, not messengers.
2. The Second View: There are prophets and messengers among the jinn from their own kind. They adduced as evidence Allah Almighty's saying: ﴿يَا مَعْشَرَ الْجِنِّ وَالْإِنْسِ أَلَمْ يَأْتِكُمْ رُسُلٌ مِنْكُمْ يَقُصُّونَ عَلَيْكُمْ آيَاتِي وَيُنْذِرُونَكُمْ لِقَاءَ يَوْمِكُمْ هَذَا﴾ [Al-An'am: 130].
The preponderant view: Is the view of the majority of scholars, that there is no prophet among the jinn, due to the clarity of their evidence. As for the evidence of those holding the second view, scholars have responded to it by explaining that the address ﴿مِنْكُمْ﴾ in the verse means from the combined total of both kinds, i.e., from humankind, and it does not necessarily mean from both kinds. Furthermore, other texts indicate that the messengers are from the children of Adam, and "messengers" here can refer to warners.
