Is prostration obligatory when reciting or hearing Surat Al-Inshiqaq during prayer?
It is Sunnah for one who passes by an verse of prostration to prostrate. If he does not, he misses out on the reward, but there is no sin upon him. This is the view of the majority of scholars and is the most preponderant opinion. The Hanafis, however, are of the view that the prostration of recitation (Sujud al-Tilawah) is obligatory.
If the reciter repeats an verse of prostration in the same sitting, the Hanafis hold that one prostration is sufficient, as long as the sitting, the recitation, or the hearing does not change.
According to the Shafi'is, there are three opinions, the soundest of which is that he should prostrate again due to the renewal of the cause. This is also what Malik and Ahmad said. The Malikis, however, made an exception for the teacher and the student, stating that they prostrate only once.
