Is complete contentment an inherent nature or an act of will? And what is the way to achieve it?

Contentment with God's decree and the servant's submission to all that destiny brings forth is cast by Allah into the hearts of some of His servants as a divine grace, or through repentance and striving against the self. Servants are divided into two categories in this regard: those inherently inclined to obey God, love Him, and be content with His decree, and those guided to it through striving.

Contentment is acquired in terms of its cause and bestowed in terms of its reality. It is the final stage of reliance on God (tawakkul). Thus, whoever firmly establishes themselves in reliance, submission, and delegation to God will attain contentment. Allah has not made it obligatory for His creation out of mercy and ease, but He has encouraged them towards it and praised those who possess it.

The path to achieving contentment is through the servant's belief in the perfection and benevolence of their Lord, and that He decrees nothing but good, as well as by striving against the self to increase faith and surrendering matters to God; so that the servant may know that what has befallen them was not to miss them, and what has missed them was not to befall them.
