Is it permissible to perform ablution by wiping over a head covering (shawl), knowing that the hair is not touched by water due to its styling?

Wiping over a woman's head covering (khimar) during ablution is not permissible according to the majority of scholars, unless the khimar is thin enough for water to penetrate to the hair, based on what was narrated from Aisha (may Allah be pleased with her). As for the Hanbalis, they permit wiping over it on condition that the khimar is wrapped under the chin and is difficult to remove. They cite the action of Umm Salamah (may Allah be pleased with her) and the : "Wipe over the leather socks and the khimar." Some scholars have permitted wiping over it in cases of hardship.
