Is it permissible for someone who woke up after the elective time for prayer has ended and the ضروري (necessary) time has begun, to perform the Sunnah acts of ablution and prolong the recitation in prayer before the necessary time ends, or must they shorten and abridge? And does the same ruling apply to someone who fears the elective time will end?

If a Muslim wakes up when the time of necessity has begun, he may perform any Sunnah prayers he wishes and prolong his recitation as long as he does not fear the expiration of the time. However, if he fears the expiration of the time, he must perform the entire prayer within its prescribed time, and it is not permissible for him to prolong it or perform Sunnah prayers that would prevent this. Similarly, if he wakes up at the end of the time of choice, it is not permissible for him to prolong it or do anything that would lead to the entry of the time of necessity before completing the prayer.
