Adultery is a grave major sin, for which Allah has threatened its perpetrator with severe punishment in this world and the Hereafter, if he does not repent. Allah has associated adultery with polytheism in His Almighty saying: "And those who do not invoke with Allah another deity or kill the soul which Allah has forbidden [to be killed], except by right, and do not commit unlawful sexual intercourse. And whoever does that will meet a penalty. The punishment will be doubled for him on the Day of Resurrection, and he will abide therein in humiliation, Except for those who repent." And Allah has forbidden approaching adultery due to its danger, and commanded lowering the gaze and guarding one's chastity. The sin of the married fornicator is more severe, and his punishment is stoning to death. It is obligatory for anyone who has committed adultery to hasten to sincere repentance and to increase in righteous deeds, and Allah the Almighty accepts the repentance of whoever repents and turns to Him.
