A woman must observe modesty in the presence of men and avoid anything that might make her an object of desire for those with sick hearts. This includes: softening her speech, as Allah Almighty says: "So do not soften your speech [to men], lest he in whose heart is disease should covet, but speak with appropriate words," and stamping her feet, as Allah Almighty says: "And let them not stamp their feet so as to make known what they conceal of their adornment." Likewise, jesting, telling jokes, laughing, and smiling in the presence of men should be avoided, as these are causes of temptation and may violate the veil of modesty.
