What is the Dome of the Rock and what are its characteristics? Is it true that it followed the Prophet during the Isra and Mi'raj, and he commanded it to stop, and it has remained standing to this day? Does it cause miscarriage in pregnant women? Did Prophet Muhammad ascend to heaven from it? Are there any relics of Jesus, son of Mary, in it? Is the imprint of a foot in it attributed to Muhammad or to Jesus?

All that is mentioned about the wonders of the Rock of Jerusalem is a lie and a fabrication, as stated by Ibn al-Qayyim, and scholars have consistently weakened the narrations concerning its virtues.

Only two things have been reported regarding the Rock:

First: That the Buraq was tied to it on the night of the Isra' (Night Journey). However, this hadith is weak and contradicted by what Muslim narrated, that the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, tied the Buraq to the ring used by the prophets. Even if that were sound, tying the Buraq to the Rock is not a reason for its veneration; for veneration is based on divine revelation.

Second: That it was the Qibla (direction of prayer) for the Jews. However, they adopted it as a Qibla through their own ijtihad (independent reasoning) and not through revelation. And Allah replaced it with the Kaaba for the Muhammadan nation.

Shaykh al-Islam Ibn Taymiyyah emphasizes that the Companions did not venerate the Rock, nor did they dedicate any worship to it, and singling it out for veneration resembles the Jews.

Also, the claim that the Rock is suspended in mid-air is incorrect; rather, it is connected to the side of the mountain. And the dome built over it is an innovation (muhdath), built by Abd al-Malik ibn Marwan during his period of conflict with Ibn al-Zubayr.
