There is no harm in shortening a portion of the hair of the head without shaving it, as long as it does not involve imitating disbelievers, transgressors, or women. This is not considered the forbidden qaza'. Similarly, there is no harm in parting the hair from the side and letting it hang over the shoulder, as long as it does not involve imitating those whom it is forbidden to imitate.
