If speaking about a person is intended for reform or to help change a reprehensible act, and it does not involve falsehood, then there is no harm in it, and it is not forbidden backbiting. However, if it is not for a beneficial purpose, then it is impermissible. If you made a mistake in identifying a person and attributed to them something they did not say, then you must clarify that to those with whom you spoke. Continuing to show kindness to relatives despite their ill-treatment brings great reward, as stated in the Hadith: "If you are as you say, then it is as if you are feeding them hot ashes, and you will continue to have a supporter from Allah against them as long as you remain upon that."
