What are the rights of the Prophet's Household (Ahl al-Bayt) from the perspective of Ahl al-Sunnah wal-Jama'ah, and are alms (sadaqah) permissible for them? If they are permissible for them, then what is the interpretation of the Hadith: "Kakh" (a sound of disapproval) to Al-Hasan when he reached for a date from the sadaqah? And what is the Sharia ruling on a ruler who does not uphold the rights of the Prophet's Household?
The Prophet's household (Ahl al-Bayt), peace and blessings be upon him, are Banu Hashim and Banu al-Muttalib, and the Prophet's wives, peace and blessings be upon him. Among their rights are: loving them, showing loyalty to them, supporting them, honoring them, emulating them, invoking blessings upon them in the final tashahhud, and giving them one-fifth of the one-fifth of the war spoils. The Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, urged adherence to the Book of Allah and his household. Those among his progeny (itrah) who are to be emulated are the righteous who adhere to the Book and the Sunnah. It is not permissible to give them zakat, due to the Prophet's saying, peace and blessings be upon him: "Indeed, charity (sadaqah) is not befitting for the family of Muhammad; it is but the dirt of people."
