Yahya ibn Mu'adh mentioned that the sign of love for the sake of Allah is that it does not increase with kindness nor decrease with harshness. Its meaning is that love for the sake of Allah is not affected by benevolence or rejection, because it is for Allah, not for the self's gratification. This does not negate the existence of a natural love for benevolence.
