What is the ruling on the deceased's family burying him at night and refusing to wait for his son, who was close to the village? Was their action correct, or was it possible to wait?

It is prescribed to hasten the preparation of the deceased, praying over them, and burying them. Delaying it without need is impermissible, due to the Prophet’s (peace be upon him) sayings: "Hasten with the funeral," and "When one of you dies, do not detain him, and hasten him to his grave." Hastening includes washing, shrouding, carrying, and walking, without causing hardship to those following the funeral.

However, there is no harm in a slight delay—an hour or two—to await a relative or to increase the number of congregants praying; because a larger number of congregants is better. For whoever has a hundred people pray over him, their intercession for him is accepted. And whoever has forty people pray over him who do not associate anything with Allah, Allah accepts their intercession for him. As for delaying for a day or two, that is a mistake.
