How can a sick person who is unable to travel to the holy lands perform the Hajj?

For someone to perform Hajj on behalf of another, it is a condition that he must have already performed the obligatory Hajj for himself. Furthermore, the person on whose behalf Hajj is performed must be incapable of performing it, either due to old age, a chronic illness from which recovery is not expected, or because they are deceased. Performing Hajj on behalf of someone who is capable or someone suffering from an illness from which recovery is hoped is not permissible, except in the case of voluntary Hajj for one who has already performed the obligatory Hajj for himself. Performing Hajj on behalf of an incapacitated person involves making the intention on their behalf and reciting the talbiyah in their name. The majority opinion stipulates that it is a condition for the obligation of Hajj on behalf of an incapacitated person that they must have initially been able to perform Hajj and then subsequently became incapacitated. Therefore, a person suffering from an illness from which recovery is hoped is not permitted to delegate someone else, and must perform Hajj themselves if they recover. As for a person suffering from a chronic illness from which recovery is not expected, and who is financially capable, they must delegate someone else to perform Hajj on their behalf.
