What is تعريض (ta’reedh)? Does it imply deception? And what is its ruling?

Allusion in speech is the opposite of explicit statement; it is not a lie, but rather speech with multiple facets, where the speaker intends for the listener to understand something different from what the speaker truly means. Its use has been affirmed in the Sunnah and by the Pious Predecessors, such as the sayings of Umar ibn Al-Khattab and Imran ibn Husain: "Indeed, in allusions there is a way out of lying." An example of this is what Umm Sulaym did when Abu Talhah's son passed away; she said to him: "His breathing has quieted, and I hope he has found rest." The Holy Quran also states: "And there is no blame upon you for what you allude to concerning the proposal of women," meaning that a man may say to a woman during her 'iddah (waiting period): "You are honorable to me, and I desire you." Allusion is permissible in matters where it is allowed, but it is not permissible to use it for slander, deceit, or insult.
