Is the fragrant scent emanating from religious and righteous people considered evidence of their righteousness?

There is no connection between a man's righteousness and the emanation of a pleasant fragrance from him. The Companions used to work with their own hands, and their scents would change. However, if this is proven from people of truthfulness, it might be a karamah (a miraculous favor) for some righteous individuals, as karamah is established both by Islamic law and by divine decree. Yet, karamah is only for those who adhere strictly to the Sunnah (definition) and does not contradict Islamic law. As for what emanates from the ignorant and deviant, it is not a karamah; rather, it may be a lie or satanic trickery, as happened with Al-Harith al-Kadhdhab (the Liar), who used to show them wonders. Therefore, Al-Shafi'i said: "If you see a man walking on water and flying in the air, do not be deceived by him until you present his matter to the Qur'an and the Sunnah." A righteous person may also be afflicted with a satanic karamah, as happened to Sheikh Abd al-Qadir al-Jilani when a light appeared to him and said, "I am your Lord." He recognized it was Satan by its saying, "I have made permissible for you what I have forbidden to others," knowing that the Shari'ah (Islamic law) of Muhammad is neither abrogated nor altered.
