A father is not permitted to prevent his son from marrying whom he desires, nor to force him to marry someone he does not wish, as long as both parties possess good character and religious commitment. However, the son must seek to appease his father by every possible means. If the father requests marriage to a specific girl, it is advisable to meet her; and if the son agrees, obeying the father is preferable. However, if the son's heart is attached to another girl and he fears harm by leaving her, there is no impediment to marrying her, even if the father does not approve, while subsequently striving to appease the father.
