The answer

The Hadith indicates that the lifespans and provisions of people are predestined and do not change from what Allah has ordained and known eternally; it is impossible for them to increase or decrease. As for the Ahadith that refer to an increase in lifespan through maintaining kinship ties, they are interpreted as the increase being a metaphor for blessings in life and success in obedience, or that the increase and decrease refer to the knowledge of the angel entrusted with life, not what is in Allah's eternal knowledge. The Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, commanded supplicating for deliverance from the punishment of Hellfire instead of supplicating for a long life, because supplicating for deliverance from punishment is an commanded act of worship.
