The question

How can a mother be persuaded to leave her job at an insurance company, given the difficulty of doing so, and should the sister's suitor who works at the same company be rejected, and how can advice be offered given a previous fatwa from Al-Azhar permitting the company's work?

The answer

Working in commercial insurance companies is not permissible due to its assistance in sin, as Allah Almighty says: "And do not cooperate in sin and aggression." Accordingly, your mother's work in this company is forbidden by the Sharia, and she must be advised by explaining the impermissibility of commercial insurance, which is based on gambling and uncertainty (gharar), and by presenting the fatwas of the Islamic Fiqh Academy. If she insists on her work and has no money except what she earns from this work, then it is not permissible for you to accept her money. As for an insurance employee proposing to marry your sister, we advise against accepting him unless he leaves his job, because he will feed her from unlawful earnings. If he insists, then your sister and mother should be advised to turn him away.
