Is it permissible for worshippers to be led in prayer by someone who caught up with the Imam for part of the prayer and then stood up to complete what he missed?

If a worshiper catches part of the prayer with the Imam, then stands to complete what he missed, and then others join him and pray behind him, this is permissible according to the more preponderant of the two scholarly opinions; this is for the purpose of achieving a congregation.
