What is the ruling on serving multi-tiered desserts (pièces montées) at engagement or wedding parties, and is this considered an imitation of disbelievers?

It is forbidden for a Muslim to imitate disbelievers in matters that are exclusive to their religion or their specific customs, based on the Prophet's (peace and blessings be upon him) saying: "Whoever imitates a people is one of them." However, if a certain custom becomes widespread and is practiced by both Muslims and disbelievers, and is no longer distinctive to disbelievers, then there is no harm in doing it. The measure of forbidden imitation is when a Muslim performs something that is characteristic of disbelievers, in which no one else shares with them. So, what has become widespread among Muslims and is no longer distinctive to disbelievers is not considered forbidden imitation. Accordingly, arranging sweets and beverages in tiers is not considered forbidden imitation, because it is a widespread custom and not exclusive to disbelievers.
