Have the sacred months remained sacred until now?

The sacred months were held in high esteem in the law of Abraham and Ishmael, peace be upon them, and their veneration continued in Islam. The prohibition of fighting during them was affirmed by the Almighty's saying: "They ask you about the sacred month – about fighting therein. Say, 'Fighting therein is a great [sin],'" and His saying: "Indeed, the number of months with Allah is twelve [in a year] by Allah's decree from the day He created the heavens and the earth; of these, four are sacred. That is the correct religion, so do not wrong yourselves during them."

A Muslim should draw closer to Allah Almighty during these months through fasting and good deeds, and by abstaining from prohibitions. The majority of scholars hold that the prohibition of fighting in them has been abrogated by the Almighty's saying: "And fight the polytheists collectively as they fight you collectively." Some scholars are of the opinion that the blood money (diyya) is increased if killing occurs during them. Thus, the veneration of these months remains, even if the prohibition of fighting in them has been abrogated.
