Is it permissible for me to slaughter a sick sheep and then dispose of it by throwing it away or burying it?

Scholars differ on the ruling concerning slaughtering a sick animal to relieve its suffering. Some, like the Permanent Committee, have prohibited it if the slaughter is not for consumption. Others, like the Maliki scholars, have permitted it if there is no longer any hope of its benefit, due to the relief it provides.

The more probable opinion is that it is permissible to slaughter a sick animal if there is no hope for its life or if there is a fear of contagion, provided that it is killed in a lawful and humane manner, and not by burning or torturing it. This is based on the Prophet's (peace and blessings be upon him) saying: "Indeed, Allah Almighty has prescribed excellence in all things. So, if you kill, kill well; and if you slaughter, slaughter well. Let each one of you sharpen his blade and relieve his animal."

However, if the illness is minor and there is no fear of contagion, the animal should not be killed; rather, it should be treated or given to someone who will care for it.

Regarding burying the animal after killing it: If it is done as an act of worship, it is not permissible. If it is done to dispose of its smell, there is no harm in it.
