What is the meaning of the following Hadith: "Every man who trails his garment will be in the Fire"?

We do not know of a Hadith with the wording, "Every musbil (one who drags his garment) is in the Fire." However, other authentic Ahadith have been narrated from the Prophet, peace be upon him, prohibiting isbal (letting one's garment hang below the ankles), among them: "Whatever is below the ankles is in the Fire," and "Allah will not look at one who drags his garment out of pride." Al-Khattabi explained the Hadith to mean that the part of the garment that reaches below the ankles is what will be punished, and that the garment symbolizes the body of its wearer. There is no impediment to taking the Hadith at its apparent meaning, that the musbil's clothes will also be in the Fire, as in the Hadith: "O Ibn 'Umar, everything of clothing that touches the ground is in the Fire."
