What is the sin of someone who recited the Qur’an, forgetting that they had not performed ablution, then sought forgiveness saying: "O Allah, Lord, forgive me this sin of mine, for I forgot to perform ablution, and none made me forget it save Satan, that I should remember it. And if You do not forgive me and have mercy on me, I shall surely be among the losers"?

The prevalent opinion is that it is not permissible for someone who is not in a state of ablution (wudu') to touch the Mus'haf (the copy of the Quran). However, if someone does so forgetfully, there is no sin upon them, because they are excused by forgetfulness. Nevertheless, it would be better if they sought forgiveness for it. It is permissible to recite the Quran without touching it for someone who is not in a state of major ritual impurity (janabah).
