The question

How can a young man who is struggling to lower his gaze and avoid relationships in a mixed-gender university, and has fallen for a modest girl, free himself from this attachment, which he fears might compete with his love for Allah, the Almighty, knowing that it is impermissible to be lenient with her?

The answer

First: Frequently supplicate to Allah, humbly implore Him, and ask Him for chastity and protection from error. Among the appropriate supplications is: "O Allah, I ask You for guidance, piety, chastity, and self-sufficiency."

Second: Be truthful with Allah and possess strong resolve, in accordance with His saying, the Exalted: "And when the matter is determined, if they were truthful to Allah, it would have been better for them."

Third: He must know that he is on goodness as long as he strives against his own self and is keen on its chastity.

Fourth: Accompany the good among students and cooperate with them in good deeds, calling to Allah, enjoining what is right, and forbidding what is wrong.

Fifth: His presence at the university should be only as much as needed.

Sixth: If continuing studies conflicts with preserving one's religion, then preserving religion takes precedence, because it is the greatest objective, and because its fruit is attaining eternal happiness.
