Is it true that the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, said to Ali ibn Abi Talib: "Do not say: 'O Allah, enrich us (make us independent) of Your creation,' for creation is in need of one another; rather, say: 'O Allah, enrich us (make us independent) of the wicked among Your creation'"? And is it permissible to supplicate by saying: "O Allah, enrich me (make me independent) by Your grace from all others besides You"?

The hadith narrated from Ali ibn Abi Talib, may Allah be pleased with him, with the wording: "O Allah, do not make me in need of anyone among Your creation," and the Prophet's correction of it, may Allah's peace and blessings be upon him, by saying: "Rather, say: 'O Allah, do not make me in need of the worst of Your creation, those who, when they give, they boast, and when they withhold, they criticize,'" is a fabricated hadith with no basis. It is not permissible to attribute it to the Prophet, may Allah's peace and blessings be upon him, due to the weakness of its chains of narration and its narrators. Such a ruling was indicated by Ibn Hajar, Al-Fattani, Ibn Iraq, and Al-Ajlouni.

What is authentic regarding the supplication for settling debts and needs is what Al-Tirmidhi narrated from Ali, may Allah be pleased with him, that the Prophet, may Allah's peace and blessings be upon him, taught him words that remove debt, which are: "O Allah, suffice me with Your lawful against Your unlawful, and enrich me with Your grace beyond anyone else." This indicates the permissibility of supplicating for independence from everyone but Allah, which further confirms the falsity of the fabricated hadith.
