The answer

A woman who is in a state of post-natal bleeding (nifas) or menstruation (hayd) during Ramadan should break her fast and make up for the missed days. It is not permissible for her to delay making up these days without a valid excuse. If she does so, she is obliged to make up the fasts along with an expiation (kaffara) of feeding one poor person for each day. However, if the delay was due to a valid excuse, then no expiation is required from her. Feeding in lieu of fasting is only permissible for someone who is permanently unable to fast due to an incurable illness, as determined by doctors. In this case, she breaks her fast and feeds, and no make-up fasts are required from her. As for a woman experiencing irregular non-menstrual bleeding (istihada), it is not permissible for her to break her fast; rather, she must fast because she is capable, as the blood of istihada is considered invalid blood and does not prevent one from fasting or praying.
