What is the ruling on frequently swearing by trivial things and repenting, then relapsing? Is swearing by fasting or money sufficient as an expiation? Is expiation obligatory for all previous oaths, or not? And do voluntary fasts, such as Mondays and Thursdays, count as voluntary acts or as expiation for an oath?

A Muslim should not swear excessively. One should remember Allah's saying: "And guard your oaths" and "And do not make [the name of] Allah an obstacle in your oaths." If the oaths are considered thoughtless (laghw) and not intended as binding, then no expiation is required of you. However, if you intended to make a binding oath and then broke it, expiation is incumbent upon you, which is: feeding ten poor persons, or clothing them, or freeing a slave. If you cannot find any of these, then you must fast for three days. There is no sin upon you for thoughtless oaths, nor for binding oaths if you do not intentionally neglect their expiation. Sin accrues to you if you do not expiate for them despite being able to. Repentance does not nullify the expiation; it must be fulfilled. Voluntary fasting does not substitute for expiation, and fasting is only permissible for expiation if one is unable to feed, clothe, or emancipate.
