Is what happens between spouses—where the wife constantly quarrels, taunts her husband with what she possesses, and controls his decisions—a purification of sins or a trial from Allah? And what is the best way to deal with her?

A wife's transgressing against her husband with insults and her disobedience are forbidden acts of nushuz (rebellion). The ruling for a rebellious wife is admonition, then abandonment in bed, then non-brutal physical discipline. Divorce should not be resorted to except after exhausting all means and when discord becomes entrenched. Patience with a wife's harm is better for the sake of the children. A wife's work in hotels is often forbidden due to the presence of prohibited things. It is better for her to dedicate herself to raising the children unless there is a need. The husband's guardianship (qawamah) regulates the wife's behavior, and he must uphold it with wisdom and justice.
