What is the ruling on placing the Qur'an on the prayer rug?

Scholars have unanimously agreed on the necessity of preserving and respecting the Mushaf (definition) (copy of the Quran). However, this respect should not be exaggerated to the point of extremism or undue formality. Placing the Mushaf on clean ground or a prayer rug is permissible when needed, and there is no degradation or insult in doing so. It is preferable, though, to place it on an elevated surface if possible.
