What should a person do who has repented to Allah and wishes to restore the rights of the employers whom he wronged by eating and drinking from their shops and taking money and in-kind items without their knowledge, while he does not know the extent of these wrongs, and does not know how to return the rights to the owners of the shops that have been sold or to the large companies whose managers and accountants change?

Repentance for encroaching upon the rights of others is not complete except by restoring those rights to them, for the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, said: "On the hand is what it took until it returns it," and "Whoever has wronged another in terms of his honor or anything else, let him seek absolution from him today, before there are no dinars and no dirhams." Whatever amount is unknown should be estimated based on what is most likely, and if the rightful owner is found, it is obligatory to pay him back, even through indirect means. As for what whose owners are unknown and it is despaired of reaching them, it suffices to give it as charity on their behalf, a view guaranteed by some scholars, while others say it should be spent on the welfare of Muslims.
