Is it permissible to give psychiatric medications to a mother suffering from strokes, who has lost her ability to speak and move, in order to calm her severe nervousness, knowing that these medications cause her continuous sleep, jaundice, and poor appetite, and would we be sinful for doing so?

If the patient is an adult of sound mind, it is not permissible to administer medication to him without his knowledge, unless it is highly probable that abstaining from it would lead to death or severe harm. This is because medical treatment (tadaawi) is permissible or recommended, not obligatory, except in cases of extreme necessity. If the medication is a sedative and not essential for life, it is not permissible to administer it without the conscious, rational patient's permission. It is advised to consult a specialist doctor regarding suitable medications for the elderly with fewer side effects, such as aripiprazole and mirtazapine, or electroconvulsive therapy. Furthermore, one should be patient with the mother, treat her kindly, pray for her, and try to convince her to see a doctor.
