What is the ruling on one who prays in a place designated for smoking?

Prayer in a place where tobacco is sold or consumed is disliked (makruh (definition)) because it is a place of transgression and a refuge for devils. Scholars have explicitly stated the dislike of praying in such a location. An-Nawawi said: "Prayer in a refuge of Satan is disliked by consensus." This is because such a place is considered a refuge for devils, as in the hadith (definition) narrated by Abu Hurayrah (may Allah be pleased with him), where the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said concerning a place where they slept until they missed Fajr prayer: "Indeed, it is a dwelling where Satan was present." So, they left it and then prayed. This indicates the desirability of avoiding places of Satan, which is the clearer of the two meanings regarding the prohibition of praying in a bathroom. Accordingly, prayer in places of transgression and debauchery is disliked due to the presence of devils therein. Moreover, an adult man who has no valid excuse must perform the obligatory prayers in the mosque with the Muslim congregation.
