Is the prayer of a traveler valid when performed among camels and sheep in the desert, 300 kilometers away, while staying for a week or two?
If a traveler intends to stay for four days or more, he must offer the four-unit prayer in full. This is the view of the majority of scholars. Accordingly, whoever stayed for a week or more and shortened the prayer must repeat it in full. Sheikh al-Islam Ibn Taymiyyah differed, holding the view that a traveler may shorten the prayer as long as he has not intended an absolute (permanent) stay. This is the view preferred by Sheikh Al-Uthaymeen, and according to this opinion, there is no make-up prayer for the traveler. However, the view of the majority is the most probable and closer to piety and caution in religious matters.
