How can the verses that indicate that believers die only once (Surat As-Saffat 58, Ad-Dukhan 56) be reconciled with the verse in Surat Ghafir (11) which speaks of two deaths and two lives, especially if the first death has already occurred for both believers and disbelievers?

Al-Shanqeeti mentioned that the two deaths (al-imatatayn) in Surat Ghafir are: a person being a sperm-drop, and their death after the expiration of their term in this world. The two lives (al-ihya'atayn) are: the blowing of the soul into them, and their resurrection on the Day of Judgment. As for the death mentioned for the people of Paradise in Surat Ad-Dukhan, it is the death they tasted in this world. Scholars have differed regarding the meaning of "illa" (إلا - except) in the verse, with some saying it means "siwa" (سوى - other than) or "ba'da" (بعد - after). There is no contradiction between the two verses; for the first death for the people of Paradise is the death they felt, which is the departure of their souls from their bodies. As for non-existence before creation, they did not taste it. Therefore, the verse mentioned the death they felt, which is the departure of the soul from the body.
