What is the ruling on listening to song lyrics free of obscenity and vulgarity, without music?
Singing without instruments or music is of two types:
First: A woman singing for men is impermissible. However, her singing for women with good words on an occasion like a wedding is permissible.
Second: A man singing. If it is with good words, it is permissible. If it is with bad words that incite vice, it is forbidden. The ruling on listening is based on the ruling of the singing itself. What is forbidden to sing is forbidden to listen to, and what is permissible to sing is permissible to listen to. However, excessive listening is not commendable. Ibn ‘Uthaymeen permitted singing devoid of music, provided it does not involve temptation or distract from obligations.
