Is the husband obligated to obey his father and divorce his wife, whom his father wishes to be divorced and whose return he rejects, or should he give his wife another chance and resolve the issue with her, knowing that the wife wishes to return to her home and her father does not wish to come and speak with the husband's father?

A wife's refusal to return to her husband's home is an impermissible act of disobedience (nushuz), unless there is a necessity. If a disobedient wife (nashiz) recants her disobedience and wishes to return, it is advisable to take her back. Obedience to the father in divorcing one's wife is not obligatory unless there is a legitimate Shariah-compliant reason. It is necessary to strive to convince the father to abandon his desire for divorce by seeking the mediation of righteous people, while continuing to show him dutifulness and kindness.
