Is it permissible to give zakat to a family whose head is an employee with an income barely sufficient for them, who has a small amount of money in the bank that is constantly dwindling, and who has a son studying at university with expenses consuming a third of the income?

It is not permissible to give zakat to a family that possesses sufficient means to cover its basic needs, for Allah Almighty says: "Zakat expenditures are only for the poor and for the needy…" [At-Tawbah: 60]. This family should invest its money instead of waiting for charity. Depositing money in usurious banks is forbidden, for Allah Almighty says: "And cooperate in righteousness and piety, but do not cooperate in sin and aggression" [Al-Ma'idah: 2]. If the money is in a usurious bank, the principal amount must be withdrawn, and the usurious excess must be disposed of by spending it on the welfare of Muslims, along with repentance to Allah.
