Is it permissible for a woman to seek divorce from her husband who is addicted to drugs?

A woman is not permitted to seek a divorce unless there is a valid reason that makes it permissible, due to the Prophet Muhammad, peace and blessings be upon him, saying: "Any woman who asks her husband for a divorce without a valid reason, the scent of Paradise will be forbidden to her." A husband's addiction to drugs is considered an excuse that permits her to seek a divorce. However, a woman should be patient with her husband and try to reform him. If she is unable to do so and fears harm, then there is no blame upon her for seeking a divorce. Sheikh Ibn Uthaymeen permitted a woman to seek a divorce from a husband addicted to drugs, while preferring that she remain with him if it is possible to reform him through advice.
