The default principle regarding procreation is that it is a right for both spouses, and neither of them may abstain from it without the other's consent. Jurists have made exceptions for cases where it is permissible not to procreate if it leads to harm. If the wife is negligent, the husband may abstain from procreation for the child's welfare. The husband should discipline his disobedient wife, and the wife is not permitted to seek a divorce except for a legitimate Shar'i reason. Whoever intends to marry should inquire about the woman's character and investigate her good religious standing.
