If an affliction results from sins, and one repents and endures patiently, does the afflicted person fall under the category of: "And give good tidings to the patient, who, when adversity strikes them, say, 'Indeed we belong to Allah, and indeed to Him we will return'"?

If a servant repents with sincere repentance, Allah erases the sin and its effect. And if a calamity befalls due to a sin, and the servant endures it with patience and seeks reward from Allah, then he is hoped to receive the reward of the patient. It does not harm him that the cause of the calamity was a sin whose effect has already been removed. Adam argued with Moses when the latter blamed him for his expulsion from Paradise, saying that Allah had decreed for him the sin and the repentance from it, and Allah had forgiven him. And he who repents from a sin is like one who has no sin.
