What should a husband do with his wife who raises her voice at him and gets angry if she doesn't call her family weekly, just as he calls his mother?

The husband is not obligated to pay for his wife's calls to her family, as this is not part of the obligatory maintenance. However, if he voluntarily does so, it is good. The wife has no right to demand that he pay for her calls to her family, and if she creates problems, he may discipline her gradually: by advising her, then threatening and rebuking her, then forsaking her in bed, then striking her without causing injury. If she persists, he may fulfill her request, divorce her, or refer the matter to the ruler to arbitrate between them through two arbiters, one from his family and one from hers. This is based on the Almighty's saying: (Men are the maintainers of women because Allah has made some of them to excel others and because they spend out of their property; so good women are obedient, guarding in secret that which Allah has guarded; and (as to) those on whose part you fear high-handedness, admonish them, and leave them alone in their beds, and beat them; then if they obey you, do not seek a way against them; surely Allah is High, Great.) [An-Nisa: 34], and the Almighty's saying: (And if you fear a breach between the two, then appoint a judge from his people and a judge from her people; if they both desire agreement, Allah will effect a reconciliation between them, surely Allah is Knowing, Aware.) [An-Nisa: 35].
