Salam is a sale of a described object with deferred delivery, and its ruling is permissibility if seven conditions are met: the capital must be paid at the contracting session; the object of Salam (al-muslam fihi) must be something that can be precisely described; its genus, type, quantity, and characteristics must be known; it must be a debt (i.e., not a specific, pre-existing item); it must be deliverable; the delivery date must be specified; and the place of delivery must be specified.
