Is the repeated theft of belongings and loss of possessions an indication of ill-gotten gains or unlawful earnings in my wealth?

If a man's money is stolen or lost, this is not proof that his money is unlawful. Rather, it is one of the calamities that can afflict a person. He should review his relationship with his Lord, for he may have fallen short in giving zakat (definition) on his money, or acquired it through unlawful means, or committed other sins.

Acts of obedience bring blessings, but Allah may test His servants in their wealth to elevate the patient. So, whoever is pleased will have pleasure, and whoever is displeased will have displeasure. As Allah Almighty says: (And We will surely test you with something of fear and hunger and a loss of wealth and lives and fruits, and give good tidings to the patient).

The righteous are tested in their wealth, and the test is according to one's religion. Calamity will not cease to afflict the servant until it leaves him walking on the earth with no sin upon him.

The saying "Lawful money is never lost" is not absolutely true, and a very weak hadith (definition) has been reported regarding it.

The loss of money does not necessarily indicate suspicion about it, but the servant should hold himself accountable regarding the source of his money and his methods of spending it.
