What is the ruling on insulting religion and what is the ruling on abandoning prayer, and is it obligatory to separate between spouses because of these two matters?
Cursing the religion is apostasy by consensus (ijma'), and if it is proven that the husband has done so, he must be advised and warned about Allah. If he repents, then his wife must separate from him, and it is not permissible for her to associate with him or allow him access to her if he does not repent. However, if he repents from cursing the religion but does not become regular in prayer, the matter is less severe, and there is no harm in remaining married to him, because abandoning prayer out of laziness is a matter of dispute, and the majority hold that the one who abandons it does not commit apostasy. It is desirable for a woman to seek khul' from a husband who neglects the rights of Allah Almighty.
